"The report rightly observes that reliable statistics are essential for effective policy making at Member State and Union level. I believe that statistics should be publicly accessible and easily understandable by both policy makers and citizens. They should also be fair and unbiased. The greatest problem in Lithuania today is the difference between what official statistics say about economic activity and how people perceive their living conditions. Often, this difference stems not from the poor quality of official statistics, but from their inappropriate use. This can lead to biased analysis and inappropriate policy objectives, and may damage both confidence in political action and the functioning of Lithuanian democracy. For example, although the Lithuanian Government and its statistics point to economic recovery and improvement, the reality is rather different. The latest report by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has revealed that in recent years, satisfaction with life in Lithuania has fallen by 10%. The report states that young Lithuanians’ confidence in a better future has also fallen by 20%. We must restore confidence and we can only achieve this if political actions – supported by unbiased statistics – have a tangible impact on people’s lives."@en1
