"I voted for the report on quality management for European statistics because independent, high-quality statistics are needed to guarantee economic growth and employment. Users of statistics must have access to relevant, accurate and timely data which are collected and compiled by national agencies in accordance with the principles of impartiality, objectivity and professional independence. Accurate data provide a basis for obtaining detailed information and analysing areas such as demographics, the economy and the environment. This is why they play a key role in the decision-making process affecting regional development. Eurostat publications, particularly those online, need to be more user-friendly for the average citizen and non-professionals. Eurostat’s website should allow easier access to complete data and include intuitive, comparative graphs in order to provide the public with greater added value and clarity. Member States should ensure that statistics are accurate across every level of government. We encourage Eurostat to disclose publicly whether it has doubts about the accuracy of any type of statistics. We call on the Commission and Member States to take the measures required to enhance Eurostat’s independence, including amendments to its institutional status."@en1
