"The European Commission has published a communication, the purpose of which is ‘to set out a strategy that would give the European Union a quality management framework for statistics related to enhanced economic policy coordination’. As such, I voted for this report, because I believe that a systemic approach to quality European statistics should be adopted, that a more proactive approach to managing and evaluating data on the public finances at an early stage should be encouraged, and that greater rigour in statistics should be emphasised at all levels of government. I also believe that Eurostat should modernise its methods for producing European statistics, so as to maintain the cost/efficiency relationship, and to ensure that accounting and publishing systems are standardised across the various Member States, using internal and external auditing methods for oversight. Finally, I should like to stress the need to develop a coherent system for researching socio-economic processes in cross-border areas, including the outermost regions, with a view to obtaining a reliable, complete and precise economic framework for regional development."@en1
