"The only way to have good economic policy in a country is if you can rely upon the quality of the statistics you are basing decisions upon. While there has been a lot of discussion over Greece’s use of inaccurate statistics in reporting to the European Commission, there is a more pressing concern in many countries that statistical agencies are not properly independent from government and are overly influenced by politicians to produce favourable forecasts and statistics to back up questionable economic decisions.
I am really supportive of Mr Scicluna’s report in this area as it reinforces the economic governance legislation that we concluded last year and looks to achieve meaningful, practical improvements to how statistics are collected and how they are used.
I continually ask both the Commission in its impact assessments, and private sector organisations when they are criticising EU legislation, to back up their arguments with facts and data, and I hold Member States to the same goal – good policy can only be made if it is based upon solid evidence that stands up to scrutiny."@en1
