"The current European sovereign debt crisis, the implementation of our objectives for 2020, and the necessity of ensuring long-term economic growth and development at both micro- and macro-regional level all call for a coordinated, carefully planned EU economic policy backed by solid data. It is clear that actions intended to lay the foundations of the EU’s long-term economic development can only be based on accurate, objective figures that cannot be influenced by political entities. To this end, it is important for both the Member States and Eurostat to put accurate and reliable data at the disposal of political decision makers and the populace. This is a precondition of monitoring economic and demographic trends and of the ability to adjust any actions that prove to be deficient in due course. It is crucial for the Court of Auditors to review statistics submitted by Eurostat and the Member States, undertake regular financial audits, and use their expertise in the field to offer professional assistance on demand. In light of the above, I can only support this motion."@en1
