"I voted in favour of this resolution because quality management of statistics is particularly important for effective economic and budgetary policy making. Such data is an effective measure for monitoring and assessing public finance data at an early upstream stage. Statistics should therefore be publicly accessible and easily understandable by both policy makers and citizens. In order to implement the objectives set, I believe that it is appropriate to give Eurostat greater investigative powers and to strengthen the relationship between Eurostat and the courts of auditors. It is important to note that every state is responsible for the veracity and authenticity of statistical data. Standardised public accounting systems must therefore be used and the way they work constantly needs to be improved. Furthermore, all Member States must make a commitment to take all necessary measures to maintain confidence in their statistics."@en1
