"I voted in favour of Mr Scicluna’s report because, in light of the economic and financial crisis, we now need independent statistics organisations to ensure data reliability so that we can take the right economic policy decisions, while it is also well worth giving Member States tangible assistance in eliminating the biggest methodological barriers in this area.
Bearing this in mind, I agree with Mr Scicluna on the need to provide Eurostat with greater investigative powers that will allow it, in line with the Member States’ own competences, to monitor public finance figures. It is also important to ensure greater transparency in terms of the personnel assigned to this task and to make it easier to consult publications, while promoting online solutions that are also easier for less expert citizens to access.
The provision of accurate, relevant and high-quality statistics is of key importance to sustainable and balanced regional development within the context of Europe 2020 strategy implementation. Furthermore, precise and exact data must be a basic requirement for obtaining detailed information on individual areas such as demographics, the economy and the environment."@en1
