"I welcomed this report. Reliable, accurate and high-quality statistics are essential for a correct and objective assessment of Member States’ economic, social, financial situation, etc., as well as for ensuring effective economic and budgetary policy making at Member State and EU level on the basis of these statistics. At present, approximately 350 statistical regulations apply to all Member States, public accounting systems are not standardised and there are no binding rules regarding the production and accuracy of statistics. There is therefore a danger that data provided by the Member States may be inaccurate and may not reflect the true situation in the Member States, which may prevent the effective implementation of the economic governance package and reduce Member States’ opportunities to revive their economies and boost growth and employment. I agree that we must move towards quality management of European statistics, particularly public finance statistics, establish uniform and binding principles for the production of statistics, and introduce standardised public accounting systems in all Member States."@en1
