"Firstly, I want to thank Ms Pietikäinen for her commendable work. It is very obvious that, if it is to be truly established, democracy depends on the representation of both sexes in political decision making. That is why the participation of women in politics must be promoted at regional, national and European level.
The means to achieve this, however, should not involve artificial legislative measures. People’s personal merits should be the basis of the nomination and selection of candidates. Quotas would easily lead to massive opposition and, to my mind, they belittle women.
We should try to discover the real reasons for the low representation of women. We need actively to influence attitudes to women and gender roles, and the stereotypes associated with them. This process must begin at school. It is especially important to provide children with diverse role models to support their development. Women should be encouraged to get involved in politics from an early age. It is also important to monitor the media closely, to be able to identify cases of gender discrimination, and to be able to do something more positive about it."@en1
