"I agree entirely with the spirit of the resolution; we must increase women’s involvement in important decision making in politics and business. However, we will not solve the problem with quotas that are introduced artificially. I believe that the attempt to establish quotas for elected political posts is contrary to the spirit of democratic elections. The Member States should therefore decide freely for themselves whether the introduction of such quotas should be considered and would be beneficial. In Lithuania, the country I represent, there is still a lot to be done in terms of improving women’s involvement, and reducing labour market segregation and the gender pay gap. However, there are areas where Lithuania exceeds the EU average, such as the number of women on the boards of major companies.
