"The European Union plays an important role in ensuring gender equality and combating discrimination. The aspiration to improve female labour market participation and access to positions of power, such as company boards, needs to stay high on the agenda. Nevertheless, despite this document’s positive aspects, I abstained from voting because I believe that the compulsory measures introduced, which should be taken by the business sector to increase female representation in all types of EU companies, are inadequate and would perhaps restrict freedom to carry on a business. We need to start with the public sector and share good practices with the business world. The business sector itself has to decide what is best for it, and it is not for us to set compulsory measures. Discussions about the economic crisis and its consequences continue, and we are seeking compulsory measures to constrain the business sector as much as possible. Instead, we should boost economic growth and entrepreneurship."@en1
