"Mr President, in recent months, there has been too much worrying news about Egypt: frequent violent attacks against the Coptic Christians, demonstrations that degenerated into riots and brutal interventions on the part of the police force, sexual assaults against women, and actions against NGOs and international foundations.
The tragic incident in Port Said is the latest illustration of a worrying phenomenon. It seems that we are witnessing increasing intolerance, radicalisation and polarisation of Egyptian society. My question is: what can be done to ensure that this trend will not be exacerbated?
I believe that the European Parliament must continue monitoring the developments in Egypt and call attention whenever abuses occur. At the same time, the Union’s representatives must express their concerns in the dialogue with the authorities in Cairo, encouraging them to behave responsibly."@en1
