"Mr President, it is quite certain that President Lukashenko, who loves to be photographed in public dashing around on the ice with a hockey stick, will be most hurt – with all due respect to our institution – not by our Parliament’s resolution, but by the fact that it will deprive him of a trip to the ice hockey world championships. It will be a real blow and I think the European Parliament should bring sustained and very strong pressure to bear on this issue.
It is good that we are talking about Belarus again. It has been perhaps the most discussed topic over the last eight years in this Chamber. I think we have to state quite clearly that use of the death penalty as an instrument not just of penal policy, but of policy as such, is absolutely unacceptable. Wherever the death penalty is proposed, we should protest against it, whether in Belarus or in any other country."@en1
