"I welcome the adoption of this resolution. Against the wishes of the Council and the Commission, the vast majority of MEPs have voted in favour of a legally binding international treaty, within the framework of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), establishing exceptions to copyright rules to enable greater access to culture and literature for the blind, broaden cultural and creative support for these people, and enable distribution between countries, taking into account technological advances in this field. Most books are never converted into a format accessible to the blind, mainly for reasons relating to copyright. With this vote, we are calling on the Union to adopt a clear strategy on the issue and act to put an end to discrimination against the blind. With this vote, we hope to stand united with our fellow citizens living with this disability and put an end to their ‘book famine’."@en1
