"I am very much in favour of calling on the Commission and Council to support a treaty that will give blind and visually impaired people the greatest possible access to books. I find it particularly horrifying that only 5% of all books are published in accessible formats. For blind and visually impaired people, this lack of accessible literature represents a significant impairment in their quality of life. In its Charter of Fundamental Rights, the EU has committed itself to protecting disabled people from discrimination. If we do not succeed in gaining broad access to the written word for visually impaired people, this commitment would be nothing more than a farce."@en1
