"Respect for, and the promotion and safeguarding of, the universality of human rights forms one of the cornerstones of European unity and integrity. The EU and its Member States should guarantee respect for human rights in their own policies, in order to increase coherence between internal and external policies, thus enhancing the credibility of the EU and the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). It is therefore pleasing to see on the agenda of the 19th regular session, among other things, panel discussions on human rights mainstreaming, freedom of expression on the Internet, freedom of religion or belief and conscience, discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity, human rights and HIV/AIDS, and the Declaration of the Rights of Minorities, as well as extensive meetings on the rights of the child, and on torture, human rights and counter-terrorism, disappearances and arbitrary detention. I firmly believe that EU Member States must encourage the UNHRC to pay equal attention to the question of discrimination on all grounds, including gender, race, age, sexual orientation and religion or belief.
Member States must take an active part in discussions on submitted reports covering, among other things, the human rights situation in North Korea, Iran and Burma/Myanmar, torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment, the situation of human rights defenders and freedom of religion or belief."@en1
