"I know what the EU-Morocco agreement represents for this country. In symbolic terms, because the Arab Spring has changed the game in the southern Mediterranean countries. In economic terms, because agriculture represents a very important part of Morocco’s development, and employs up to 75% of the workforce in rural areas. However, I did not approve this report for at least two reasons. In terms of content, this agreement risks making the fruit and vegetable sector more fragile, when it has already been bled dry, without sufficient guarantees being provided to limit distortions of competition. In terms of form, it is no longer acceptable for the European Parliament not to have a say in the content of the liberalisation agreements. We must be involved upstream in negotiations with third countries. We must do this in order to amend the reports and to improve their content while taking into account their impact on European producers and raising the level of demand for Moroccan produce. Finally, it is unacceptable that this agreement should be put forward while the results of the impact assessment on economic, social and environmental consequences are not known. We cannot put up with this kind of behaviour from the Commission any longer."@en1
