"Now more than ever, Morocco needs the European Union’s support, not only in the current context of the Arab Spring, but also, more particularly, because Morocco is one of our closest partners. I already voted in favour of extending the existing agreement last December. This agreement was needed because it allowed 10 Member States to fish in Moroccan waters in return for which they paid financial compensation that was used to develop Morocco’s fisheries policies across the whole country. After a long and difficult process in committee and then in the House, the European Parliament at last reached a consensus, which I welcome. The European Parliament cannot, and should not, abandon a long-standing partner of the EU. Instead, we should now do our utmost to consolidate the partnership agreements with Morocco and propose new agreements based on a new approach in order to support the democratic process that is under way."@en1
