"My vote for the resolution in question was clearly a yes, as all the statements made and referred to therein give cause for serious concern. The results that the political and economic relationship between the EU and Russia have yielded so far are undeniable, but the recent public mood and the investigations and reports, as well as the attitude taken in respect of Syria (the UN veto and arms sales) provide grounds for grave conclusions. All this is no doubt due in part to the upcoming Russian presidential elections and the preceding campaign, but the EU must not disregard the facts which indicate a shift towards the endangering of political pluralism and the fairness of the elections, the prospect of resorting to intimidation, the restriction of the freedom to express sexual orientation or sexual identity, and other anti-democratic measures which seriously violate the achievements that have been made and put into practice in the field of human rights so far. As regards Syria, Russia must adopt a clear and unambiguous stance, because its current behaviour could also generate uncertainty in respect of the joint action drafted on the basis of the proposals of the Arab League."@en1
