"When the Hungarian Parliament adopted the new constitution and a series of new laws, there were doubts as to whether they comply with EU law, values and the fundamental principles of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. On 17 January 2012, the European Commission started infringement procedures against Hungary regarding the restriction of the independence of the Hungarian Central Bank, the judiciary and the personal data protection authority. The citizens of all countries that have joined the Union have the same rights and opportunities to defend those rights as other EU citizens. I therefore welcome the resolution, which calls for it to be established whether the actions of the Hungarian Government conflict with EU law and restrict democratic principles – the separation of powers and the pluralism of political parties – and whether they restrict the freedoms of expression and religion, the right to a fair trial and other rights."@en1
