"Mr President, it is probably extremely difficult for most of us to describe what we are witnessing in Syria. We see it continuing night after night and day after day on our television screens and it must be condemned in the strongest possible terms and in the strongest possible way. There is absolutely no way we can condone or sympathise with it.
While we cannot be the world’s policeman – and that is what I think we have to learn from events over recent years – we must offer what support we can. I have to say I was disappointed when the veto was used in the United Nations because, at the end of the day, it is the people on the ground – as has been said – who suffer the most. I hope for wise counsel to prevail as soon as possible so that they can look forward to a better future."@en1
