"Mr President, I welcome the acceptance of this agreement. After all, if ever there was a North African state on a good evolutionary journey, then that state has to be Morocco: this is a country rooted in tradition, but open to reform, a classic constitutional state that is clearly moving in the direction of greater parliamentarianism. It is in our interests to support Morocco and to cooperate as closely as possible with it. After all, we do not know what will become of the military powers that have once again gained the upper hand in Egypt, nor what direction Islamism will take now that it has established itself among the opposition. Morocco, however, is a country of checks and balances, a country that is an important partner for Europe. We should not hold it at arm’s length out of egotistical self-interest on the part of individual Members. It was a mistake to reject the fisheries agreement. I am pleased that we have done things differently this time. The fisheries agreement and other agreements should be supported by the House as quickly as possible."@en1
