"Mr President, the resolution on Hungary tabled by the Left and the so-called Liberals in this House on Hungary is reminiscent of Orwell’s Ministry of Truth. In other words, it has nothing to do with the facts.
You will see this for yourself if you visit Hungary. As soon as you leave the station, you will see someone demonstrating against the government. When you switch on the television news in the evening, you will hear someone criticise the government. Nevertheless, claims are made that there is no freedom of the press or freedom of expression. This is quite absurd. Hungarian television broadcast the debate in this House in full.
I wish a similar level of freedom of expression existed in all Member States, so that the people could make up their own minds. Following this debate, I received e-mails and letters from hundreds of Hungarians saying they felt the speakers on the Left were referring to a completely different country because they completely ignored the facts. They also told me that they believe that the issue at stake here is no longer the truth, but rather ideological warfare against a free country."@en1
