"The reactionary political sectors often view immigration as a threat. For our part, as well as advocating the integration of and solidarity towards immigrants as a humanist principle, we also realise that the benefit to the economies of the various Member States in terms of labour that is not only necessary, but also highly qualified in many cases, meets the development needs of a European Union faced with the trend of an ageing and decreasing population. During this time of the profound crisis of capitalism, so-called ‘austerity’ policies are depriving the workers and the people of rights, which also makes the social and labour situation of immigrants more precarious and causes an increase in illegal immigration and work. However, we also advocate the right to family reunification, which must mean that family members have the right to be integrated with the social, economic and cultural life of the Member States. We consider it crucial that all 27 Member States sign the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, since, if effectively implemented, it would provide an important international framework for protecting migrant workers’ rights."@en1
