"Mr President, we must cooperate in both matters: the removal of Assad and the democratisation of Syria. That requires a number of things. First, clear support for the plan drawn up by the Arab League countries. Second, close cooperation with Turkey. It is a key player in the region. Third, cooperation with Russia, not only at the UN, but also at the bilateral level between the EU and Russia. Fourth, cooperation with opposition forces, including with regard to the post-Assad democratisation plan for Syria. And fifth, and I consider this to be the most important, cooperation with the forces of the ruling Ba’ath Party that are willing to support Syria’s transition to a democratic regime. This is the key lesson from post-Saddam Iraq. Cooperation with them would also prevent the Islamists from seizing power in Syria. I think that this is what we all want."@en1
