"Madam President, we cannot remain indifferent to or silent about the tragic situation suffered by the Syrian people as they face Bashar al-Assad’s bloody regime. We cannot abandon the Syrian people. First, let us firmly state our support for, and solidarity with, the Syrian people who are suffering.
What strategy shall we build? What can we do? First, condemn the veto exercised at the UN by the Chinese and Russian governments and demand that NGOs and journalists be allowed to operate on Syrian territory. Next, support the people by supplying the medicines and medical equipment that they are lacking, bearing in mind that even rural hospitals are being attacked. Medicine cannot be used as a weapon. It is also important to contribute to the setting up of a humanitarian corridor.
Finally, we must recognise and support the Syrian opposition around the Syrian National Council so that they can rebuild a state that matches the aspirations of the Syrian people. Furthermore, we must send Assad and those responsible for crimes against humanity to the International Criminal Court."@en1
