"This report, drafted by Mr Gauzès, addresses the contribution to the Annual Growth Survey 2012. At a time when economic growth is almost negative, largely due to the austerity measures adopted by the Member States, a report on this issue could not be more timely. Having ensured fiscal consolidation and controlled growth of public expenditure, sustainable economic growth should be promoted as a matter of urgency. To this end, use needs to be made of the instruments adopted, such as the ’six-pack’ and the European Semester. Initiatives aimed at young people should be increased, and there should be significant investment in education and vocational training. Flexicurity policies in the labour market and support for small and medium-sized enterprises should not be overlooked either, with a view to promoting employment. Solidarity and subsidiarity are two principles that the Member States should bear in mind in building an EU that must not operate at two speeds. I voted for this report because it calls on the Member States to put their commitments into practice, so as to emerge from the crisis and promote economic growth and job creation."@en1
