"I voted in favour of this report because it is essential, now more than ever, that the European Parliament gives itself an instrument to make its voice heard on the issue of Europe 2020 strategy implementation, in particular, given the imminent Spring European Council on 1-2 March. Despite the fact that the economic and sovereign debt crisis has clearly showed that austerity measures are not sufficient to overcome such a dramatic situation – even creating the conditions for a recession of the weaker euro area countries (the Greek case is more than emblematic) – the Commission’s approach, as expressed in the Annual Growth Survey, again identifies priorities that are not contributing to achieving the EU 2020 goals in a balanced way. The motion we have adopted is a comprehensive and well-elaborated document that will clearly define the role of Parliament in the future negotiations with the Council and the Commission. I think the time has come to break down the dogmatic approach, defining job creation and social inclusion policies as opposed to fiscal stability. The economic crisis will lead to a deeper and more dangerous social crisis if Europe does not take action in the fields of growth, job creation and social inclusion."@en1
