"In this day and age, when new technologies have an increasingly important role, it is vital that all European citizens have the same level of access to digital technologies and broadband, regardless of whether they live in rural or urban areas. Thus, the digital agenda, the digital economy and this, the first policy programme for five years, which have just been adopted, are vital for the development of the Internal Market. The aim is for the European telecommunications industry to regain its global leadership and increase productivity, cohesion, competitiveness and access to a single market. The Member States’ adoption of the proposal by Parliament and the Council to free up the 800 MHz frequency band for wireless broadband Internet services in all Member States by January 2013 will help to create a pan-European telecommunications market, where new services can create opportunities and growth for a market of 500 million consumers."@en1
