"Access to the radio spectrum is essential for a wide range of services, from telecommunications and broadcasting to transport and space applications. The importance of wide and equal access to the radio spectrum lies in the fact that citizens will be able to take full advantage of digital technology. Better use of the spectrum could also support the European economy, since the introduction of fast wireless services will boost competitiveness and growth. This political agreement will pave the way for development, which will enable the EU to assume a global position in terms of broadband speed, mobility, coverage and capacity. The approval of the Member States and the proposal of the European Parliament and the Commission to make the 800 MHz frequency band available for electronic communications from 1 January 2013 will contribute to the creation of a pan-European telecommunications market, where new services can create opportunities and growth for a market of 500 million consumers. It should also be borne in mind that speeding up the development of mobile broadband to at least 30 Mbps by 2020 for all EU citizens will contribute to achieving the objectives of the Digital Agenda for Europe."@en1
