The agreement achieved between the Member States in the Council to increase financing for the programme to distribute food to deprived persons to EUR 500 million per annum (from EUR 113 million initially proposed by certain Member States) is, of course, most welcome. In these very difficult economic times, with unemployment increasing in numerous Member States, especially those hit by the economic crisis, such as Greece, governments and national bodies must focus their attention on making full use of these funds. In previous years, we have seen inefficient take-up of funds due to a lack of information for the bodies involved, red tape and other such factors. It is unforgivable in terms of the social framework of Europe for money available for such a sensitive issue, for which no national contribution is required, to go to waste as a result of negligence."@en1
