Confidence in the single market, which is the basis of the European Union, has been affected by the current crisis and must now be restored. I believe the austerity measures implemented in certain euro area Member States are not suitable for achieving this end. Such policies should be accompanied by initiatives that promote economic growth, and do so swiftly, with particular focus on small and medium-sized enterprises. Measures aimed at combating unemployment among young people as a matter of urgency are necessary for the future of the single market and the European economy.
