Over the course of the next two years, the programme will ensure food aid is provided to the most deprived persons within the European Union. The programme, which has benefited 18 million persons within the EU in 20 Member States, will be continued until the end of 2013, with an annual budget of EUR 500 million. It is important that the programme is also continued beyond 2013. Unfortunately, I am quite certain that we will not have succeeded in eradicating poverty by that time. Poverty is precisely the most important rationale for the continuation of this programme. The ever-growing number of persons within the EU in need of assistance is disturbing."@en1
