The proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing technical requirements for credit transfers and direct debits in euros is a measure designed to strengthen and act as an incentive to the proper functioning of the internal market, providing all the benefits of an integrated payments market while eliminating the high charges associated with the parallel operation of the traditional systems and the SEPA products. The chief beneficiaries will be consumers, who will be able to effect payments in euros within Europe in a safer and more economical way, and also the financial system itself.
