Support for innovation and the effective utilisation of resources for research and technology depends on safeguarding intellectual rights and protecting intellectual property rights. Within that framework, we must remember that the European Commission operates the European Observatory on Counterfeiting and Piracy, one of the aims of which is to develop technical tools designed to prevent imitation, illegal copying and piracy. That is why the Commission’s proposal for a regulation entrusting the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market with the operation of the European Observatory on Counterfeiting and Piracy is a move in the right direction, as this merger will allow the Observatory to access the financing and infrastructure needed in order to perform the tasks and activities, while at the same time benefiting from the expertise of the Office for Harmonisation, thereby saving approximately EUR 40 000 to the EU budget."@en1
