At a time when the dematerialisation of information, knowledge, and cultural, artistic, and commercial production is becoming increasingly relevant, it is clearly necessary to tighten the reins on the protection of intellectual property rights for companies and for European citizens, especially through increasing consumers’ awareness of the dangers to themselves and to the European economy that result from counterfeiting and piracy. Without this tightening of regulations, the risk of a rise in infringements connected with these kinds of rights threatens to grow exponentially. Due to its nature and wealth of experience, the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market is clearly the appropriate body to take on the responsibility for these new tasks. I hope that the amendments proposed by Parliament have enriched the Commission’s original text and that the new tasks to be entrusted to the Office will have a positive impact on safeguarding industrial property rights and consequently on safeguarding the innovation and competitiveness of European companies. Without adequate protection and a collective awareness of their importance, this will not be possible."@en1
