"The proposal contained in the Masip Hidalgo report comes within the context of measures aiming at the implementation of the Commission’s strategy for creating a single market for intellectual property rights, which will reform several areas by 2014.
The main purpose of the proposal that we have adopted today is to coordinate the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM) and the current European Observatory on Counterfeiting and Piracy (to be renamed the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights), in order to carry on an effective, appropriate and targeted fight against infringements of intellectual property rights in a concerted manner at both national and European levels.
I voted in favour of the proposal because I consider it a valuable step towards achieving the rational and effective implementation of the principle of defending all forms of intellectual property rights. I welcome the coordination of the Observatory within OHIM so as to enable it to act consistently and in a concerted manner in a sector that is both important and sensitive. On the one hand it will raise awareness in the public and private sectors of the impact of counterfeiting and piracy, and on the other it will inform consumers of the dangers associated with buying counterfeit goods."@en1
