"In order to achieve the EU 2020 strategy objectives, especially the smart growth element, the EU needs research and innovation. To ensure that innovators are rewarded according to their intellectual and financial efforts, appropriate protection must be afforded to intellectual property rights. This is why I supported the agreement at first reading between Parliament and the Council, whose objective is to increase the efficient operation of the European Observatory on Counterfeiting and Piracy by transferring it to the management of the OHIM, thereby providing the ideal solution in terms of cost and ensuring that the Observatory has access to the OHIM’s expertise and resources. The Observatory will therefore be able to make a more effective contribution to raising consumers’ awareness of the problem of counterfeiting and piracy, including their economic impact and the risks to consumers. I also firmly believe that the new regulation will improve cooperation at both European and global level on combating counterfeiting and piracy, and will help develop new business models that will increase the legal cultural content offering, thereby supporting economic growth and cultural diversity."@en1
