"− I voted in favour of this report. The Europe 2020 strategy is based on smart growth, which consists of promoting creativity, knowledge and innovation. In the next decade it is essential to improve EU research results and ensure greater application of smart products and services in the market. The successful creation of a single market for research will depend on guaranteeing effective protection of intellectual property rights. The recent increase in intellectual property rights infringements (a study conducted in 2010 indicates that EUR 10 billion and more than 185 000 jobs were lost due to piracy in the music, movie, TV, and software industries in the EU in 2008) is reducing investments in innovations, killing jobs, threatening the health and safety of European consumers and preventing small and medium-sized enterprises from developing. I agree that the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market should be strengthened for this purpose and it should be entrusted with certain tasks related to the protection of intellectual property rights, which would help use to better understand the scale of intellectual property right infringements and respond to them more effectively."@en1
