"Mr President, intellectual property may sound like a contradiction in terms but, on the contrary, it is in many respects very consistent.
I voted in favour of this proposal because its aim – to entrust the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs) with certain tasks relating to the running of the European Observatory on Counterfeiting and Piracy – is necessary and indispensable for fighting violations of intellectual property rights. Its main objectives are to increase awareness in the public and private sectors of the impact of counterfeiting and piracy and to inform consumers of the dangers of buying counterfeit goods.
Agreement was reached at first reading on 19 December, on the basis of 33 compromise amendments. The amendments mean that the title of the regulation and the name of the Office are not changed in line with the European Observatory. An even more important and fundamental point is the fact that civil society will be represented at the meetings. All of that will further raise the level of democracy and participation of the key event that we are about to celebrate with today’s vote."@en1
