"Mr President, intellectual property rights are a tool for safeguarding European cultural diversity and at the same time ensure the Union’s economic growth, while also acting as a reservoir for the creation of new jobs.
In view of the huge economic damage that infringements of those rights cause to EU income, it has become necessary in recent years for the Member States and the European institutions to step up their efforts to fight such infringements.
Therefore, measures to inform consumers of the dangers of buying counterfeit goods and to make them more aware of the negative impact of piracy and counterfeiting on European industry are, I believe, justified. That is why I voted in favour."@en1
