"This report once again is drumming into us the idea that excessive public debt is at the root of the financial crisis and that we need controlled, efficient public spending. It even goes so far as to stress the need for the Member States to apply measures to increase their taxes, without saying which ones, but we can easily guess. In other words, it is the same old song again. A few references to combating tax fraud and the distortions of double taxation are not enough to convince me to do other than withhold my support from such a report, especially as it dares to mention ‘social welfare’ but, it goes without saying, there is no reference to the necessary tax harmonisation from above, nor to the need for social convergence, nor even to the support required by industry and SMEs, let alone a rejection of any social or environmental dumping."@en1
