"Energy access is a fundamental prerequisite for poverty reduction and for enabling human development. The report reflects this and I therefore voted in its favour. In 2010, the United Nations launched the target of ‘universal energy access by 2030’. According to the International Energy Agency, one and a half billion of the world’s population have no access to electricity. It is estimated that the energy required to provide energy for all would not involve a significant increase in overall consumption or in emissions. EU development aid has traditionally concentrated on economic growth and environmental objectives. Energy access for the poor has not received the attention it deserves. The report we have approved today is, therefore, to be applauded, given that it requires universal energy access to be one of the objectives of EU development aid. The objective is to consolidate the EU’s political will and financial commitment to play a fundamental role in achieving universal energy access by 2030."@en1
