lpv:translated text	"The UN designated 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. This offers an important opportunity to act, now that universal energy access by 2030 is a fundamental objective announced by the UN Secretary-General. The European Union wants to be an active participant in this programme. That is why I welcome the approval of Mr Neuser’s report on EU development cooperation in support of the objective of universal energy access by 2030. This is about giving access to modern energy services to populations which have so far been deprived of them. It is also about focusing on sustainable energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and pursuing a decentralised energy strategy to ensure that energy is accessible in remote areas. It is further evidence that the urgently needed change in direction in global energy trends is under way. Finally, the reason why I fully support this project is that it is closely bound up with the action to combat climate change."@en1
