"The EU generates 2 billion tonnes of waste, of which 40 million tonnes is classed as special waste, every year. What might be helpful, therefore, is the combination of an increase in recycling rates together with strict controls on exports of electronic waste and a shifting of the cost burden on to those who cause the waste. However, this increases the risk that businesses will save on disposal costs by shipping electronic waste to Africa or other areas by calling it ‘development aid’. Measures to avoid waste are much more important and, in this context, in ordering everyone to use toxic energy-saving bulbs, the EU has hardly covered itself in glory in this respect. I have taken this into consideration when voting."@en1
