"I voted in favour of this resolution because sport is not just a major public health tool, but also a social and cultural phenomenon as well as a dynamic sector of the economy. Sport is also an important tool in development policy. Consequently, the European dimension in sport also needs to be coordinated. An ambitious budget is required in order to achieve this goal. Given the benefits provided by sport, both the EU as a whole and each individual Member State must encourage citizens to become involved in sport and promote a healthy lifestyle. There should be a special focus on people with disabilities and their integration into sporting activities. I welcome the proposal that the profession of sports agents should be a regulated professional activity and that a European register of sports agents should be created which would help to protect athletes from the risk of conflicts of interest. Furthermore, in order to stop doping and other kinds of manipulation of sports events, we must constantly encourage Member States to exchange information, experience and best practices."@en1
