"This report on the ‘European dimension in sport’, drafted by Mr Fisas Ayxela, is coming out at a time when the world of sport is in mourning because of the tragedy that took place in Cairo, Egypt, at the end of a football match, where clashes led to more than 70 deaths and around 1 000 injuries. First and foremost, I should like to extend my condolences to the families of the victims and express my solidarity with all those who are victims of violence in sport. The advantages of sporting activity are unquestionable, both for those taking part and for society in general. It has undeniable benefits in terms of education; of health, benefiting participants, in terms of quality of life, and the state, in terms of savings on medical costs; of society, with thousands of volunteers working together on organising sports activities; and of the economy, as an activity representing 3.65% of European GDP and employing 15 million people. As such, I welcome the proposed measures; specifically, more sport on school curricula, establishment of the European Year of Sport, the new ‘Erasmus for All’ programme, and all means of combating doping and violence, such as the database of hooligans."@en1
