"… for the excellent, comprehensive report drafted by the rapporteur, which is welcome in light of the debates on the particular role of sport. Sport, which is one of the most multifaceted activities, has implications for various areas, ranging from health, tourism and the economy to education, social integration and the promotion of peace. I should stress that attention must be paid to both professional and amateur sport. It is well known that investing in sporting activities reduces public expenditure on health significantly. I therefore support not only the elderly but children too getting involved in sport. Providing schools with the equipment they need for PE lessons is vital for encouraging children to fulfil the minimum number of three hours of sport recommended by the European Parliament. These are just some of the arguments in favour of having a budget specifically for sport in the forthcoming Multiannual Financial Framework, so that we comply with a provision granted to the EU by the Treaty of Lisbon. Thank you and congratulations, Vice-President, and every success in your new job."@en1
