"Mr President, I would like to support the motion for a resolution and the opinion of the Committee on the social role of sport. I am in favour of sport being a compulsory subject at all levels of schooling, but I am also in favour of all school sports grounds serving the wider public outside school hours. Sport has huge potential for improving overall health at any age. Sport can be a means of integrating socially excluded people and eliminating all forms of discrimination. Giving priority to inter-generational sports can take many forms with benefits for public health, and with social, cultural and economic benefits for society. Sport is also a good way for young people to use their free time and to avoid drugs, violence and other negative phenomena. However, as a woman – and a former active sportswoman – I expect more support for women in sport, the provision of equal access and adoption of measures in the area of equal opportunities."@en1
