"Madam President, Baroness Ashton, Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world and is experiencing a political crisis that can only be solved through the application of the road map leading to the presidential and legislative elections. This country is experiencing negative growth. Normally, our contribution is close to 50% of this country’s budget. The European Union has, rightly, suspended its budgetary support for national indicative programmes (NIP) from the 9
and 10
European Development Funds, but not for the Millennium Development Goals. Meanwhile, the population is suffering and companies set up in Madagascar are sometimes called on to help in spite of themselves.
While we support your position, we should like you to use all of your influence with the Southern African Development Community, so that the legal mess concerning the return of the former president is cleaned up as soon as possible, since this subject is one of the elements that is most sensitive to the application of this road map.
I should like to hear your opinion on the subject and also tell you that the EU-Madagascar Friendship Group, which we have just established in the European Parliament, is ready to work with you and the Commission in the interest of the Madagascan people and to uphold the values of our Union."@en1
